Tucked into the historic downtown of Deadwood, South Dakota, The Gem Steakhouse and Saloon delivers a memorable dining experience that blends classic Western charm with modern comfort. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted by warm lighting, rustic decor, and the inviting buzz of the bar — a clear highlight of the establishment. The bartenders here know their craft. Whether you’re in the mood for a locally inspired cocktail, a classic Old Fashioned, or one of their many top-shelf whiskeys, you’ll find the drink selection impressive and the pours generous. The bar seating is comfortable and encourages conversation, but for those looking for a quieter or more scenic dining experience, the outside seating area is a must. With large windows that offer a stunning view of the historic Main Street below and the Black Hills in the distance, it’s the perfect spot to unwind with a drink and a steak. Speaking of steaks — they’re cooked to perfection. Tender, well-seasoned, and served with hearty sides, the food holds its own alongside the ambiance. The service is friendly and attentive without being overbearing, adding to the relaxed yet refined atmosphere. Whether you’re stopping in for a cocktail or settling in for a full meal, The Gem offers a little something for everyone. It’s a great place to soak in the Deadwood vibe with a cold drink in hand and a front-row seat to the town’s charm.

Excellent food in a nice quiet environment with comfortable seating. Very interesting how it is located in the place of the original Gem from the 1800s. If you're a fan of the HBO Deadwood series then take note the restaurant seems to honor another HBO series - Chernobyl, because that's how hot their horseradish is!. Far better than any horseradish I've ever eaten.

Our server. Kayleigh (?) was top notch. She was professional, attentive, great with suggestions on steak choice, checked with us often enough to meet our needs, but didn't hover. She shows pride in her work and the establishment she works for. It was fairly slow, so when we engaged her in conversation, she spent a few minutes chatting. I had the New York strip, my wife had the sirloin. Both were cooked to our request. Both had great flavor. My steak had a bit more grisle than I hoped for, but that's pretty minor. Our baked potatoes were cooked properly & the steamed vegetables were cooked as they should be. We chose to share a slice of the lemon cake for desert. It was delightful! The atmosphere is beautiful and our table was intimate. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner & our server couldn't have been better! Thank you!

Nestled in the heart of Deadwood’s historic downtown, Gem Steakhouse & Saloon effortlessly blends Old West charm with contemporary comfort. From the warm glow of its rustic interior to the inviting buzz of its well-stocked bar, the ambiance sets the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. The bartenders here craft cocktails with skill and care, offering everything from locally inspired mixes to classic Old Fashioneds alongside a curated selection of top-shelf whiskeys, poured liberally to satisfy any palate.

The outdoor balcony is a standout feature, providing sweeping views of Main Street and the distant Black Hills—an ideal perch for savoring a perfectly cooked steak or unwinding with a well-crafted drink. Speaking of steaks, Gem’s offerings impress with their tenderness, seasoning, and hearty accompaniments, all reflecting a dedication to quality and flavor. The New York strips and sirloins come highly recommended, cooked precisely to order and paired skillfully with baked potatoes and steamed vegetables that highlight the meal without overpowering it.

The service enhances the experience seamlessly; attentive servers like Kayleigh balance professionalism with genuine warmth, ensuring that every guest feels attended to without intrusion. Beyond steaks, the menu surprises with dishes like shrimp Alfredo, where a slight adjustment in sauce thickness doesn’t overshadow the overall quality, and rich desserts such as the lemon cake, made even more memorable by thoughtful touches like ice cream additions.

Gem Steakhouse & Saloon honors its historic roots—the original Gem from the 1800s—and even nods playfully to pop culture with a horseradish so boldly hot it rivals the intensity of the HBO series “Chernobyl.” Whether you're drawn by the lively bar, the serene outdoor seating, or the inviting solitude of a quieter dining room, Gem offers a dynamic yet comforting setting that captures the spirit and flavor of Deadwood itself. It is a place to indulge not just in food and drink, but in an atmosphere rich with history, craft, and community.
